We’ve always known the fishing on Leech Lake was great, especially for walleye. But if you haven’t been there in the past few years, you may have missed the latest development. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported just last fall that there are so many walleye in Leech Lake that officials want anglers to take more. The slot limit is now 20-26 inches instead of 18-26 (and you can keep one trophy fish over 26).

The old limit led to plenty of fish making plenty of other fish, a near-record walleye biomass. The DNR reports that spawner walleye are at a a 26-year high and there are fewer anglers out on the lake.

Even better? There are plenty of other great game fish on the lake. There are jumbo perch, crappie, northern pike, bluegill, and large and smallmouth bass. If you like the thrill of the hunt, the muskie fishing at Leech Lake is some of the best in the midwest (of course, these are muskie fishing standards, meaning the old “one in every ten thousand casts” rule still applies!). There’s even eelpout, if you’re into that.
