The Ice:
The weather this past week was spectacular on the big lake. Besides the snow melt, the warm weather did not have a large impact on our ice sheet. Due to the crack, the road had to move slightly. Instead of heading straight out of the resort, you now have to cross the bridge on the Northwest corner of Pipe Island. Currently we are open to all vehicle traffic and with no snow on the ice you can move freely around this corner of the lake.
The Fishing:
The warm weather did help with the bite over the past weekend. Walleye action moved up a little shallower for most of the rental houses. The best bite was in the 10-15 ft range on the main lake, and the 30-35 ft depths in Walker Bay. Setting up I-fish pros, or tip ups in those depths with a plain hook and a large shiner or Rainbow worked best during the twilight and evening hours. During the day #5 Rapala Jigging Raps or #3 Puppet Minnows fished aggressively found fish. The gravel rock transitions near Pelican Island, Bear Island and Diamond Point seemed to be the best areas this past weekend. Using an underwater camera to find these transitions is key.
Perch fishing was good this past weekend. It usually picks up with the warm weather. Many anglers were finding their perch in the same areas they were finding walleye. Small blue or orange jigging spoons tipped with euro larvae or wax worms are producing the most fish in these areas. If the fish seem to turn off from the wax worms, set up an i-fish pro with a hook and fathead.
The local small lakes are starting to kick out some good crappie and sunfish action with this warm weather. They are out in the basins right now and using small jigging spoons tipped with waxies, or a bobber and small minnow are producing a lot of fish. Drill a lot of holes and use your flasher to find the fish first.
The Prep:
Before you head out on the lake stop by and pick up your road pass with a map of the ice roads. We will have more minnows in this weekend and a good supply of your favorite frosty beverage. We also have Flashers, Underwater cameras and gear available to rent at the Pro Shop. It looks like another warm weekend coming up and the fishing should continue to stay good. Look forward to seeing you on the ice.
