Ice Conditions
Happy New Year from Trappers Landing Lodge. The ice conditions from the Ice Road are good. We have 20+ inches of ice on the road. Off the road, the report is 17+ inches out to Pelican Island, North of Pelican Island we are seeing ranging ice reports of 8-17 inches. Heading North of Pelican, we are suggesting ATV or Snowmobile traffic only. Please remember to go slow on the ice roads and keep it under 20 mph.
Fishing Report
This cold front has made the walleye fishing spotty over the past weekend. There were some nice fish caught in our rental houses and by our guests using the roads. The anglers that were set up on rock piles in 17-23 ft. of water did the best. If you are not on rocks, find some. Setlines with a large shiner or rainbow minnow worked better than jigging. Make sure your setlines are less than 6 inches from the bottom.
Walker Bay
Walker Bay still seems to have a steady walleye bite going on in the low light hours. Main bay deeper humps in the 25-30 ft. range continue to produce fish. If you can find a hump with less pressure, the fish have been very active. The shoreline breaks also have been producing fish. Look in the Cedar Point, Templar Point and Breezy point areas in 18-25 ft. Sand Point has been steady with a good day perch bite and walleyes closer to the evening. Look for the perch in 6-12 ft. of water and a little deeper in the evening for walleyes. Ice conditions continue to vary in the Bay with ice reports from 10-16 inches. Vehicle traffic has been steady in the Bay but still use caution and check before you go.
Pine Point
With the extreme cold, the bite on Pine slowed a bit. With more stable temperatures ahead, we expect the bite to really pick up. The cold has made it tough to get out and cover ice. With the somewhat warmer weather coming, it should make it easier to be more mobile. Ice conditions are good West of Pine Point and North to the Hardwoods. 12-16 inches seems to be pretty consistent. From Pine to Goose Island and East of Pine Point, ice still is very inconsistent. 8-12 inches in many spots, so continue to check before you go.
Looking ahead
We are in for a warm up by this weekend and do see a weather change with some snow expected by the end of the week. This usually means good fishing to come. With the full moon happening on the second, we should see the overnight bite improve throughout the weekend. We will be looking at expanding the ice road to reach some new areas by the end of the week. The restaurant will be open Thursday through Saturday for dinner and bar service. We have bait and all your favorite beverages in our Lodge. Good luck on all your outdoor adventures and we hope to see you on the ice.
