Ice Conditions
The ice is great in front of Trapper’s Landing Lodge. It is 26+ inches and the cracks/heaves we were experiencing earlier in the season have healed with the snow and cold weather. Off the roads, we have a measured snow cover of 6 inches with some drifted spots of 24 inches. This upcoming warm weather really should help settle that snow on the lake down to a drivable depth. Just look ahead while venturing off the road so you do not drive into a snowbank.
Fishing Report
Walleye continue to be on the slow right now due to the inconsistent weather patterns the past couple days. The anglers that are catching walleye are catching them during the overnight hours in 20-25 ft of water. Jigging very aggressively with a flutter spoon tipped with a minnow head or rippin’ rap is getting some fish to respond. In the hard-sided ice houses, a setline with a shiner and plain hook are out fishing the jigging rods. The daytime bite has been slow for the walleye but if you head out to the basins you will find some very hungry Tullibee and whitefish willing to hit your jigging spoon. The best action is in water deeper than 22 ft. Perch action is starting to pick up as well in the shallow bays especially with this warmer weather moving in this weekend.
Looking Ahead
With highs forecasted in the high 30’s, we will not be planning to expand the road system by the weekend and will wait to see how the ice reacts to the warm temperatures. The Merit will be open for food and bar service Thursday-Saturday. As always be safe for all your outdoor adventures and we hope to see you on the ice.
