WALKER BAY ICE REPORT AND FISHING REPORT 02.12.19
The Northern Minnesota weather has made February fishing very challenging, to say the least. With the frigid cold and snow that never seems to end, Minnesotans have got their money’s worth this winter.
Travel seems to be the big question around the Leech Lake area. With lots of snow on the lake, travel continues to be very challenging. Snowpack varies from 12” to 30” on the Bay. Track vehicles or snowmobiles are the best means of travel off-road. There are roads plowed throughout the Bay but it is very challenging to get off them. If you have a plow, you will need it. Also with the amount of snow on the lake, we are seeing slush and flooding in many areas. Make sure you block your house or get the snow plowed away from them to keep from flooding.
We are seeing the perch bite continue to pick up in the Sand Point and Pine Point areas. 8-12 ft of water seems to be the ticket with a rattle spoon tipped with a minnow or minnow head. Best is to stay on the move and keep sorting through perch. Transition areas from sand grass to sand seem to be the best areas to target. We should keep seeing an improvement of the perch bite as we get later into February and March. The walleye bite has been a bit spotty like normal for this time of year. They are still picking off fish in the deeper water humps in Walker Bay but seeing smaller sized fish. Don’t be afraid this time of year to pick a good breakline in 18-25ft of water. You may not see the numbers of fish but should see better quality and average size. We are about a week away from Eelpout as well so make sure you have your Pout rods ready. Look in the Cedar Point, Templer Point, and Breezy Point areas for your best Pout action. Along the steep breaklines and deeper humps always seems to produce Pout. Make sure you have your Big Nasty Pout spoons and keep them glowed up and thumpin’ the bottom.
Make sure you check out the Trapper’s Landing Facebook Page, stop in at Reeds in Walker or visit Trapper’s Landing Lodge for your most up-to-date reports and conditions. Lake roads and fishing are changing daily right now. We also have some great end of season Ice Specials in the store and online at www.reedssports.com. Have a great weekend.
