Sitting in the office today you can see the signs of the most recent cold front that has blown into the area over night. I am watching boats slowly motor into the three foot waves and the overcast skies are adding a little color to the lake to make it look a little angry this afternoon. I know I would be looking for shelter from the wind today, but I also know that the windy side of the lake is where the fish bite the best. Today would probably be a great day to fish the rock pile just outside the marina for some walleyes since this wind is pushing the bait fish right into the fishes mouth.
Speaking of fishing on the lake our guests and local guides are having some good success with walleye right now on the lake. Jigs and minnows still seem to be the ticket for most of our guests. Most people are drifting with the jigs in 8-12 feet of water(fow). We have also started to hear reports of anglers using spinner rigs, and slow death rigs tipped with night crawlers. Most of the anglers that are fishing with spinner rigs are finding their best fish in 10-15 fow. We are experiencing some bug hatches right now on the lake, but with water temps slowly creeping up the walleye fishing should be good for the next couple weeks.
If you are not into walleye there are plenty of other fish that are biting on the lake as well. The Northern Pike have been fairly active in the shallow weedy bays, they seem to be attacking any spinner baits or spoons that are being thrown at them. If Pan fish are what you are looking for there have been some good numbers of crappies being caught of off our docks during the lowlight periods using a slip bobber tipped with a small minnow. I also have seen some nice crappie being pulled out of Walker Bay as well. The musky season did open over the past weekend, and I haven’t heard much in the way of catching but did hear about a lot of follows this past weekend.
Fishing is good right now, and the summer has arrived, our pool has been very popular this year so far and the Beach Fire Bar and Grill will be full time next week! Our kitchen staff has been hard at it during the weekends and the reviews have been excellent so far! If you have not visited us before we would love to meet you. If you are out on the lake or hiking in the woods we hope to see you out there and as always be safe on all your outdoor adventures.
