The cold weather has allowed the ice road to open to all traffic! The current road goes out to Huddles Reef with side roads to Variety Reef to the east, and Roger’s Point to the west. Ice thickness varies from 18-24 inches on our end of the big lake. There is still an active crack that has a bridge just north of Hoger’s Reef. Please use caution while traveling off road, slower speeds are recommended. Current snow depth on the lake is 4-6 inches with some deeper drifts.
Fishing this past weekend was good and a decent daytime bite is starting to happen. The best bite was on the mid-lake rock structures in 15-20 ft. Setting up on top of the rock structures was better than the edges. The best areas for these structures can be found near Huddle’s Reef, Variety Reef and to the North of Rogers Point. Large boulders are key. During the evening using a Custom Jigs & Spins Glow Demon tipped with a minnow works the best. During the day aggressively jigging an Orange VMC Tingler or Northland Buckshot Spoon tipped with a minnow head was outfishing the setlines this weekend.
Perch were being found this weekend on the shoreline structures in the same depth as the walleye. A full fathead or small shiner on a setline with a plain hook was getting most of the perch, you have to weed out a lot of small ones though to find a couple of jumbos right now.
Weather permitting, the ice roads will be expanding soon! Stop by the office for your ice road pass, map and live bait. Yes, we have cold beer too! If you forgot your Vexilar or want to try the latest and greatest electronics, we have plenty of flashers and underwater cameras to rent. Be safe on all your winter fishing excursions and we hope to see you on the ice.
