THE ICE
The recent sub-zero weather we’ve had the last couple of days has improved ice conditions on our end of the big lake. We are open to all vehicle traffic with 25”+ on the roads and 20-25” off the roads, so bring your auger extensions! We are not having any issues with travel off the roads as the snow is anywhere from 6”-12” on the lake with random drifts throughout. We still have a pesky crack on the north side of Pipe Island which is safe to cross as Lakewood Lodges has built a bridge over it.
THE ROAD
Lakewood Lodges currently has roads spreading across the main lake so chasing those walleyes is easy to do! The road heads towards Huddle’s Reef, then east towards Diamond Point and Variety Reef. They also opened a road over towards Roger’s Point and up to Big Rock Reef near Stoney Point. The roads are averaging well over 25”of ice on them for all sizes of rigs.
THE FISHING
The best depths to look during the day are 15-25 ft on the main basin and 30-50 ft. in Walker Bay. Anglers using an aggressive technique with a Custom Jigs and Spins Gold Flutter Spoon or VMC Tingler Spoon tipped with a minnow head 1-2 ft off bottom are getting those aggressive fish to bite. During the evening, the wheel houses on a top of a rocky hump in 15-20 ft are finding fish throughout the night especially with the full moon. Setlines with a Glow Hook or Green Glow Demon Jig tipped with a full rainbow/shiner minnow are working best.
Perch continue to be found in the shallow bays around the lake, Sucker, Boy, Uram and Agency Bay are kicking out some decent numbers of perch. Use a settling with a bobber and small gold jig tipped with a full minnow in 8-12 ft of water to get the best action right now. Crappie have been active on the local area lakes, but each lake is different. Most are transitioning out to the main basin of the smaller lakes. Using your favorite tungsten jig tipped with your favorite plastic, or if they are little more finicky a plain hook tipped with a crappie minnow below a light bobber works well too. Use your Vexliar to find the suspended fish first and make sure you have plenty of auger gas.
