Hello, I’m Josh and I’m here with Dawson Miller and this is the Trapper’s Landing Lodge fishing report. It’s July 22nd today, it’s a beautiful day out here on Leech Lake. Right now we are actually pulling lead. With our set up today, I have a purple flicker minnow on. When fishing with leadcore , you drop it out and it is a color-coded lead line, for each color release, it drops down an additional 5 ft. So you know if you drop it out four colors, you are going to be down in about 20 ft of water. Lead core is used for deep-diving trolling, this is a great technique for catching these Leech Lake Walleye later in the summer when the water warms up. You are going to want to find basins in order to find the fish and it is very speed sensitive too, so if you go 3mph it actually dives a little less. When trolling with leadcore, you will want to troll at a speed of 2 – 2.3 mph using a flicker minnow. We like using more of a natural color bait here on Leech Lake, especially during the day with the water being so clear.
Another technique that has been working all summer here on Leech Lake is slip bobbering. The weed lines are still kicking out fish. We are currently off of the Diamond Point area, but the Rogers Point area is another location to try fishing deep with leadcore in the deep basins the rocks out there.
The musky bite has been picking up a little bit recently, this morning there was a guy who came back with a couple of muskies and he caught those on accident actually. With the warmer water coming, the muskies on Leech Lake are starting to snap a little bit. Some guys seem to be pitching up on shallower reefs and casting there so that’s kind of what I’ve heard. Burn those bucktails right now, speed kills so you want to go fast with those reefs you’re talking about – North Bar, out near Bear Island, those are good areas to look right now on those mid-lake structures and reefs out in those areas.
We’re looking forward to the rest of the summer! It looks like there’s gonna be some great weather! If you have not met Dawson yet, he is here for the summer working down at the Marina. He is going into his sophomore year at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. He is also on the basketball team there. So if you see him around the resort, be sure to tell him hi!
